This is the terrifying moment a tornado looms over a car park during an extreme weather spell in Japan.

Footage captured by Bronco shows powerful gusts of swirling wind forming and moving across Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture on September 11.

The video, recorded from inside a car, captures the funnel cloud extending from a dark, stormy sky down to the ground. Several vehicles are seen parked in the area as the vortex draws closer.

The incident comes as a torrential weather spell swept through the country. Japan Meteorological Agency reported that around 130 millimetres of rain fell in just one hour in the capital following a torrential downpour.

Areas such as Haneda Airport and Musashino-Kosugi were severely affected by the flooding.

Due to lightning, air traffic control and ground services at Haneda Airport were suspended, preventing aircraft from taking off.

Rail services, including the bullet train and other local lines, were also temporarily halted.

Officials confirmed that at least one person was killed and another injured when they were crushed by several stacked containers that collapsed due to strong winds at a port in Ota Ward.

The torrential rain was brought by an autumn rain front, along with other contributing weather systems.
