The United Nations supports the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at a press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York City on Friday. He also reiterated opposition to Israel's plan for illegal settlement construction in the West Bank. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday adopted a draft resolution endorsing the New York Declaration by a recorded vote of 142 in favor, 10 against and 12 abstentions. The New York Declaration, circulated at a high-level international conference held at the United Nations in late July, sets out an action-oriented pathway toward a peaceful settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the realization of the two-state solution. Responding to a media query on the New York Declaration and the two-state solution, Dujarric clarified the UN’s support of the two-state solution and any effort that brings hope to achieve it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday that "there will never be a Palestinian state" as he signed to approve a plan of fast-track construction in the contentious E1 area of the occupied West Bank, a project the international community has long warned could shatter prospects for Palestinian statehood. When asked about the Secretary-General's reaction on this, Dujarric said that the UN has been very clear on its position against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, calling on Israel to stop engaging in settlement activities. The E1 area, a corridor east of Jerusalem between the city and the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, is seen as especially sensitive because construction there would server East Jerusalem from the northern West Bank, undermining territorial contiguity for a future Palestinian state. First proposed in the 1990s, the E1 plan has long been frozen due to opposition inside Israel and abroad. Netanyahu pushed it forward in 2012 and revived it again ahead of the 2020 election. We've been very clear on our stand against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank that are maintained and established against international law. As obviously, looking at the plans for the increase of this E1 settlement, settlements further entrench the occupation. They fuel tension. They systematically erode the viability of a Palestinian State that we were just talking about. And we once again call on Israel to cease all settlement activities pursuant to its obligations under international law."; FILE: Jenin, West Bank - Jan 22, 2025 [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 10.
