As part of the exercise, Russian Airborne Troops moved to take-off airfields and began loading military hardware and cargo into Il-76 military transport aircraft. According to the scenario, paratroopers are expected to be air dropped behind a mock enemy line to complete assigned combat missions.

In another stage of the drills, crews of Su-34 fighter bombers carried out bombing runs on ground targets simulating advancing enemy reserves. The strikes were conducted from an altitude of about 400 meters, with Su-57 aircraft providing fighter cover.

Russia and Belarus began their joint strategic military exercise Zapad-2025 (West-2025) on Friday with an aim to improve the skills of commanders, strengthen coordination and enhance field training of regional and coalition troop groups to maintain peace, protect interests and ensure military security.

The Defense Ministries of Russia and Belarus said some 13,000 personnel were expected to take part in the exercises, which would include repelling airstrikes, countering sabotage groups, planning the use of nuclear weapons, and operating Russia’s new Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile system.
