ARKHANGELSK REGION, RUSSIA (RELEASED ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Russia's Northern Fleet has successfully test-fired Oniks cruise missiles from its Bastion coastal defense systems in the Franz Josef Land archipelago in Arkhangelsk region, the country's Defense Ministry announced on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The live-fire exercise was conducted as part of the ongoing Zapad (West) 2025 strategic military exercises. The drill simulated a defense scenario against a hypothetical enemy naval group in the Arctic region.

According to the ministry's statement, the Bastion missile battalions first conducted a tactical march from a staging area to a designated launch position on Alexandra Land Island. During the maneuver, the units reportedly neutralized simulated enemy sabotage forces to secure the route.

Upon receiving the launch order, the crews fired two Oniks supersonic cruise missiles at a sea target located more than 200 kilometers away. The ministry reported that "all targets were engaged by direct hit," based on objective control data.

The statement highlighted the capabilities of the Bastion system, noting its Oniks missiles fly at 2.5 times the speed of sound and are "practically invulnerable to modern air defense and anti-ballistic missile defense systems."

It was emphasized that these mobile systems, which can be deployed in minutes, are designed to establish restricted access zones in the Arctic and can defend coastlines exceeding 600 kilometers in length. The missile is capable of destroying naval targets of any displacement at a range of several hundred kilometers.
