INTERVIEW WITH FORMER MELBOURNE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER JAMAL HAKIMMELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 14: The people of Australia have been taking to the streets every Sunday for 100 weeks to protest against Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza. The 100th Sunday protest was held this week, Sept. 14, taking place in major cities across Australia, particularly in Melbourne, the country’s second-largest city. Thousands gathered in front of the State Library Victoria in central Melbourne, demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s assaults and calling on the Australian government to impose sanctions on Israel. Following speeches, demonstrators marched through the city center, carrying banners that read: “Israel is a terrorist state,” “Stop the genocide in Gaza,” “Zionism is terrorism,” “Stop killing children,” “Sanction Israel now,” and “Israel kills one child every hour.” Former Melbourne City Council member Jamal Hakim said that for 100 weeks, they have been peacefully protesting with families and people from different backgrounds who identify as Australians. He said they know what needs to be done, saying: "We want sanctions imposed immediately." He added that our government, by supporting Israel’s crimes, is becoming complicit in them. The Israeli military continues to demolish homes in northern Gaza and Gaza City aiming to force civilians to relocate southwards. Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza has killed more than 64,800 Palestinians since October 2023, and devastated the enclave, which faces famine. Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the territory.
