BOYACA, COLOMBIA - SEPT. 14: Boyaca Bridge, site of the decisive 1819 battle that secured Colombia’s independence, remains one of the country’s most important landmarks and attracts visitors daily.

Located about 110 kilometers from Bogota near the Pan-American Highway, the bridge was rebuilt in 1919 after suffering heavy damage. It now forms part of a memorial park with monuments dedicated to the independence struggle.

The complex features statues of Simon Bolivar, Francisco de Paula Santander and Pedro Pascasio Martinez, along with Plaza de Banderas, the Arch of Triumph, the Flame of Liberty and an obelisk symbolizing victory.

On Aug. 7 each year, Colombia holds military parades at the site to commemorate Independence Day.

The Battle of Boyaca, led by Simon Bolivar and his commanders, defeated Spanish royal forces and marked a turning point not only for Colombia but also for independence movements across Latin America.
