An elephant was caught on camera stealing durian fruits from a family's home.

CCTV footage shows the ravenous jumbo rummaging through crates placed in a garage in Chantaburi, Thailand.

The creature can be seen using its trunk to pick up baskets filled with the spiky fruits in the early hours of July 14.

It then grabbed the creamy tropical fruits and peeled them with ease before munching on them.

After finishing one crate, the elephant moved onto the next, enjoying its found snack while the family slept.

The homeowner said: 'Wild elephants frequently wander in the area. If we happen to be awake, we usually call the elephant monitoring centre to drive the animals back into the forest.'

Elephants are known for their voracious appetite. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) found need to eat up to 150kg of food per day - the equivalent of 375 tins of baked beans

Conservationists in Thailand say that wild elephants - up to 3,500 of them - have even developed a taste for human food and prefer to rummage through homes and vehicles for snacks, instead of the bland leaves they find in the forest.
