Philippines: China Coast Guard Attacks Philippine Vessel With Water Cannons
Philippines - September 16, 2025 Bajo De Masinloc, Philippines – On the morning of September 16, 2025, the BRP Datu Gumbay Piang (MMOV 3014), operated by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), was targeted by China Coast Guard vessels while supporting the “Kadiwa para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda” initiative. At approximately 9:14 AM, CCG 5201 fired a water cannon at the starboard side of the Philippine vessel, 14 nautical miles east of Bajo De Masinloc. The attack shattered glass on the bridge, damaged the captain’s cabin partitions, and caused a short circuit affecting electrical outlets and five air conditioning units. One DA-BFAR personnel was injured by flying glass. CCG 21562 simultaneously engaged from the port side, 17 nautical miles east of BDM Shoal, also using water cannon fire. A Chinese maritime militia vessel, CMM 00001, performed hazardous maneuvers and attempted water cannon attacks 10.38 nautical miles east of BDM Shoal, but the Philippine crew successfully avoided damage. Earlier at 8:30 AM, a People’s Liberation Army-Navy warship, bow number 525, issued a radio broadcast announcing live-fire exercises at specific coordinates, alarming Filipino fishermen in the area. Despite the hostile actions, the BRP Datu Gumbay Piang safely returned to safer waters, rejoining nine other DA-BFAR vessels and continuing its mission to provide fuel and supplies to Filipino fishermen. The Philippine Coast Guard and DA-BFAR remain committed to protecting maritime jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea and ensuring the safety of local fishermen.
