China: Computing power energizes oil city in China's Xinjiang
Storyline: Computing power energizes oil city in China's Xinjiang [Voice_over] The town of Karamay in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was once known for its oil reserves. Today, the town is known for another hot commodity, computing power. There are six data centers in Karamay with an overall computing power scale of more than 17,000 petaFLOPs, an attractive consideration for start-ups in the AI sector. At a recent AI application competition in the city, participants from across the country showcased innovations in robotics, drones, and AI medical and office software. They also took note of the readily available computing power which has prompted at least one robotics company from Shanghai to move their HQ to Karamay. [Sound_bite] Li Yan, sales director, Shanghai Panpan Robotics Co., Ltd.: "We indeed value Karamay's unique advantage in computing power." [Voice_over] In July, the city opened an industrial park and new infrastructure projects hoping to attract more companies from emerging sectors. Officials from the city's bureau of science and technology say, so far, it's working. [Sound_bite] Yang Lei, head, Science and Technology Bureau of Karamay District: "In less than a month, over 30 companies have entered the park, with 18 of them focusing on computing power and AI." [Voice_over] Besides data centers, Karamay is also home to the country's largest single-scale film and television animation rendering base. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
