China: China makes remarkable progress in digitalization over past 5 years

[Voiceover] Chinese officials said that China has achieved remarkable progress in digitalization during the 14th Five-Year Plan. Speaking at a Thursday press conference, they noted that the country now leads globally in areas such as digital infrastructure, computing power, and artificial intelligence, with benefits extending across industries and everyday life. They reported that China now holds 60 percent of the world's AI patents. Advances in AI are transforming multiple sectors, enhancing manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation, while also improving the quality and efficiency of public services. [Soundbite] Liu Liehong, Director, China's National Data Administration: "By the end of June 2025, China's total number of 5G base stations had increased fivefold compared to 2020, reaching 4.55 million. And the country's total computing power ranked second in the world, strongly supporting economic and social development. Investment in digital infrastructure has created huge market demand, driving innovation in the ICT industry and fueling new business models." [Soundbite] Chen Ronghui, Deputy Director, China's National Data Administration: "Public services have become more convenient. Smart healthcare services such as internet hospitals are expanding rapidly, and direct cross-province medical insurance settlements have benefited tens of millions of people. Digital social security coverage is also expanding, with over 1 billion people holding electronic social security cards. In city clusters such as the Yangtze River Delta, regional service connectivity have significantly improved convenience for the public." [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
