China: AI development in China drives demand for energy equipment
Storyline: AI development in China drives demand for energy equipment [Voice_over] With the rapid expansion of AI computing data centers in China, an unprecedented demand for energy equipment is surging. This company in southwest China's Chongqing municipality makes transformers for computing-power infrastructure projects and is seeing a noticeable uptick in orders. The deputy general manager said the proliferation of AI based applications for personal devices is driving demand. [Sound_bite] Zou Hong, deputy general manager, company of computing-power infrastructure projects: "From January to October, both our orders and deliveries increased, with year-on-year growth of roughly four to five million U.S. dollars." [Voice_over] Both downstream and upstream manufacturers are feeling the pressure to develop innovative and energy saving products for data centers. In Chongqing, a power-equipment company is developing ultra-thin oriented silicon steel, one of the key raw materials in transformers, which can help reduce energy loss. [Sound_bite] Fan Gangqiang, deputy chief engineer of new materials division, power-equipment company: "We recently developed thinner products of 0.2 millimeters or below. They offer higher magnetic induction and significantly lower iron loss. When used in transformers, energy loss can be reduced by roughly 20 percent. For a transformer weighing about 200 tons, that translates into annual electricity savings of roughly 400,000 to 500,000 kilowatt hours." [Voice_over] According to a recent report from German data analysis firm Statista, as of November China had 381 data centers, ranking fourth globally. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
