China: China steps up development, application of commercial meteorological satellites
Storyline: China steps up development, application of commercial meteorological satellites [Voice_over] The China Meteorological Administration has announced a series of measures to step up the development and application of the country's small commercial meteorological satellites. CMA officials say small commercial satellites currently make up two constellations-Tianmu and Yuanyao. The data gathered from the new commercial satellites, CMA says, will augment data gathered by the country's Fengyun weather satellites that are owned by the state. [Sound_bite] Xu Na, deputy commander, Fengyun polar-orbiting satellite ground application system: "Small commercial meteorological satellites are capable of effectively complementing the spatial-temporal resolution of Fengyun meteorological satellites in occultation detection." [Voice_over] China's current Fengyun satellite constellation is used by dozens of countries and regions around the world. CMA officials say countries in Europe and the Americas have introduced policies and legislation to promote the sharing and utilization of global meteorological satellite data. [Sound_bite] Jia Zhihong, official, Department of Integrated Observations, China Meteorological Administration: "Their overall capabilities are of world-class, playing a key role in weather disaster prevention, forecasting, early warning, and climate change response. The satellites provide services to 133 countries and regions worldwide, becoming a pillar of meteorological operations and a symbol of modernization." [Voice_over] CMA officials say China has been developing its weather satellites for more than 50 years and currently has 8 Fengyun satellites in orbit. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
