Super Typhoon Ragasa floodwaters burst through hotel doors and submerges lobby
In the early hours of September 24, Super Typhoon Ragasa approached Hong Kong, smashing the glass doors of the Furama Ocean Park Hotel as seawater flooded in, knocking people over, fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m., as Ragasa neared Hong Kong (about 100 km south). The Hong Kong Observatory had issued the highest-level No. 10 Typhoon Signal at 2:40 a.m., with average wind speeds of 118 km/h and gusts over 220 km/h.
Video footage shows massive waves breaking through the hotel’s protective barriers, shattering a row of glass doors as seawater surged into the lobby. One person was knocked over but was later assisted by others.
The hotel stated that no guests or staff were injured, additional staff were deployed to handle the typhoon’s impact, and operations continued.
Ragasa is classified as a super typhoon, with maximum central winds of 16 on the Beaufort scale (55 m/s). Across Hong Kong, seawater flooding, fallen trees, and landslides were reported. By the morning of the 24th, 19 people were injured, and over 700 stayed in temporary shelters.
In response to Ragasa, Hong Kong schools were closed, public transport suspended, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge closed, and non-emergency services at public hospitals paused. The Observatory urged residents to stay away from the coast, avoid going out, and be cautious of heavy rain and storm surges.
The destructive power of Ragasa is comparable to typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018), marking the first time since 1964 that Hong Kong has faced two No. 10 Typhoon Signals in a single year.
