INTERVIEW WITH PALESTINIAN RESIDENT SHAMSWEST BANK, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 25: Palestinians living in the Israeli-occupied West Bank say the region has effectively become an "open-air prison" after Israel closed the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge at the Jordanian border—their only gateway to the outside world. Under the decision of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, crossings at the border that allowed Palestinians in the West Bank to enter Jordan and from there reach the rest of the world have been suspended until further notice. Israel is also considering restrictions on the movement of top Palestinian Authority (PA) officials in response to the recent wave of international recognition of statehood, The border crossing was used by Palestinians in the West Bank, including senior officials of the Palestinian Authority, as well as those visiting relatives in Jordan or abroad, students, and businesspeople. Following Israel’s unlawful decision, Palestinians are now trapped in the West Bank just as they are in Gaza. Those Palestinians who were abroad or in Jordan before the decision could not return home. Palestinians living in the West Bank, who already require special permits to cross the Separation Wall, said that this decision has trapped them in an "open-air prison." Highlighting the negative impact on daily life, Palestinians stated that they have been punished for years under various pretexts. Residents emphasized that the closure of the city’s only gateway to the world has cut off all business, trade, and logistical connections and crossings, but they affirmed that, despite everything, they will remain attached to their land and continue to resist. Netanyahu said earlier this week that he would decide on Israel’s official response to the recognition after returning from Washington, where he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on Monday. Since Sunday, 11 countries – the UK, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium, Andorra, France, Malta, Monaco and San Marino – have officially recognized the state of Palestine, raising the total number of recognitions to 159 out of 193 UN member states.
