NEW YORK, UNITED STATES - SEPT. 26: Hundreds of protesters gathered in New York City's Times Square on Friday, Sept. 26, chanting and holding signs to denounce Israel's military offensive in Gaza, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly.
The demonstration coincided with a significant walkout by numerous country delegations inside the UN hall as Netanyahu began his speech.
Carrying signs with messages such as “UN member states must act: Sanctions Israel arms embargo now” and “Stop starving Gaza,” the crowd shouted “Free, free Palestine!”
The protest was organized to voice opposition to the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.
According to figures, the death toll in Gaza since October 2023 has surpassed 65,000, with a majority being women and children.
The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) stated on Friday that the Israeli blockade has caused a severe lack of supplies, leading to a dire food crisis. The agency reported that one in three children in the Gaza Strip had no food at all in the past 24 hours.
Israel has severely restricted the flow of aid into Gaza, closing all crossings since March 2 and preventing sufficient amounts of food, medicine, and humanitarian assistance from entering, despite a buildup of relief trucks at the borders.
While Israel occasionally allows limited amounts of aid to pass through, UN agencies and aid groups say it falls far short of meeting the population's basic needs.
There have also been reports of aid trucks being looted by gangs, which Gazan authorities allege are protected by Israel.
