Woman dragged out stadium after screaming during Shanghai Masters match
At around 4 p.m. on October 1, during the Shanghai Masters match between Italian player Matteo Berrettini and French player Adrian Mannarino, a disturbance broke out in the stands.
A 46-year-old woman, surnamed Xie, had been drinking before attending the match. Throughout the game, she repeatedly let out piercing screams and twisted around in her seat, seriously disrupting play and causing the match to be suspended three times. The chair umpire issued multiple warnings over the microphone, saying, “Lady, please calm down,” but she ignored them.
When security personnel tried to intervene, Xie refused to cooperate. She pulled out a foreign passport and a cut-corner Chinese ID card, waving them while shouting provocative phrases in English such as “Help me.” She even moved toward security staff to deliberately make physical contact, displaying an extremely arrogant attitude.
After repeated warnings failed, several security officers forcibly removed her from the stands. She continued screaming and struggling as she was carried out, while a young mixed-race boy with her was taken away separately by staff.
As she was escorted out, the entire crowd broke into applause and cheers, with some shouting “Get out.” The match then resumed.
At 10:52 p.m. the same day, the Minhang branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau issued a statement: Xie had disrupted order at the event after drinking, and since she ignored repeated police warnings, she was lawfully removed and given an administrative penalty (the exact details were not disclosed).
Online speculation identified Xie as a Chinese-born woman with foreign ties. She reportedly claimed on social media to be the CEO of a jewelry company, obtained Swedish permanent residency in 2022, and became a Swedish citizen in 2024. Originally from Guangzhou, she had relocated to Shanghai the same year.
