Former England Captain Lewis Moody Reveals MND Diagnosis. Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody has revealed he has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease a progressive condition that has claimed the lives of fellow players Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow. The 47-year-old, part of England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup-winning team and a multiple English and European title winner with Leicester spoke to BBC Breakfast two weeks after his diagnosis. He admitted he is not yet ready to face the full implications of the disease, focusing instead on his immediate wellbeing, family, and preparing for future challenges. Moody first noticed weakness in his shoulder during gym training. After physiotherapy failed to improve the problem, scans revealed nerve damage in his brain and spinal cord caused by MND. Despite the diagnosis, Moody says his symptoms are minor, affecting only his hand and shoulder. “I don’t feel ill. I don’t feel unwell,” he said, adding he remains capable of “doing anything and everything” for as long as possible.
