California Law Forces Netflix, Hulu to Turn Down Ad Volumes. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law on Monday regulating ad volumes on streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. The law aims to address complaints about excessively loud streaming ads that disrupt viewing experiences, similar to a federal law from 2010. The new law is expected to become a de facto national standard, given California’s influence in the entertainment industry. Newsom said the law responds to Californians who don’t want commercials louder than the shows they watch. SB 576, authored by State Sen. Tom Umberg, was inspired by his legislative director’s complaints about loud ads waking up his baby daughter. Hollywood opposition initially resisted the bill, citing difficulties in controlling ad volumes from multiple sources. After amendments, including protections for streamers from private lawsuits, the bill gained bipartisan support and passed the state legislature. Streaming platforms have until July 2026 to comply with the new volume regulations. [Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT]
