The demonstration began at 18:30 local time in the city's iconic Place de la République. Protesters condemned Israel's recent interception of the aid flotillas and called for the release of all detained individuals. Large banners were unfurled bearing slogans such as "(French President Emmanuel) Macron: Stop the Genocide" and "Free Palestine." French activists who had taken part in the Global Sumud Fleet addressed the crowd, alleging mistreatment by Israeli authorities. The protest saw the release of wish lanterns into the sky as a symbolic gesture. The demonstration attracted several notable figures, including European Parliament (EP) member of French-Palestinian origin, Rima Hassan, who had herself been detained by Israel as part of the Global Sumud Fleet and returned to France earlier this week. Other attendees included EP French Member Emma Fourreau, La France Insoumise (LFI) Party Member Marie Mesmeur, and French doctor Andre Pascal. The Israeli navy attacked ships of the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Thousand Madleens to Gaza early Wednesday in international waters, roughly 120 nautical miles (138 miles) from the enclave. They attacked at least nine boats of the Freedom Flotilla headed to Gaza and arrested 145 activists from 30 countries, according to flotilla organizers. The convoy set sail after Israeli naval forces attacked and seized more than 40 boats last week that were part of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, and detained over 450 activists on board. Most of them have been deported.
