PROTESTERS CHANTING SLOGANS (2 SHOTS)TRIPOLI, LIBYA - OCT. 3: Libyans staged demonstrations on Friday, Oct. 3, demanding the release of activists detained by Israeli forces during the Global Sumud Flotilla’s mission to deliver aid to Gaza. Crowds gathered in Tripoli’s Algeria Square and in the western city of Tajoura, waving Palestinian and Libyan flags and denouncing Israel’s seizure of the humanitarian convoy. Protesters held signs with photos of Libyans aboard the Omar Mukhtar, which joined the Gaza flotilla from Tripoli before being raided by Israeli forces; contact with the 17 activists on board, including 11 Libyans, was lost shortly after. Muhanned Ali Sheikh, a member of the Maghreb Sumud Convoy Committee, called on Arab and Islamic governments to take a firm stance and mobilize diplomatic channels to pressure Israel. Israeli naval forces attacked and seized vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla on Thursday and detained more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. The flotilla had been attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade of the enclave. Israel has maintained the blockade on Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. Since October 2023, Israeli bombardments have killed nearly 66,300 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it all but uninhabitable, with the blockade also pushing Gaza to a state of famine, with medicine and medical supplies in short supply.
