US, Los Angeles: Atwater Village Semi Overturns And Snarls Traffic Amid Major Storm
Los Angeles, United States - October 15, 2025 10/14/2025 11:30 pm GMT-0700 ATWATER VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A major crash involving a semi-truck and several other vehicles shut down all lanes of the northbound I-5 Freeway near the SR-134 interchange late Tuesday night, as a powerful rainstorm drenched the Los Angeles area with more than three inches of rain. The crash was reported around 11:30 p.m., when dispatchers received calls of a four-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck, a black Nissan Pathfinder, and a black Honda Civic. According to the California Highway Patrol, the semi overturned and became wedged between the left and right shoulders, blocking all lanes of the northbound I-5. Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and transported the driver of a dark colored sedan to the hospital in unknown condition. CHP officers quickly requested a hard closure and Sig Alert, diverting traffic off the freeway onto the SR-134. The collision also resulted in a large oil spill, prompting cleanup efforts by Caltrans crews amid steady rain and slick road conditions. Paramedics treated multiple patients at the scene and transferred them across the southbound lanes due to the complete closure. Heavy-duty tow trucks were called in to upright and remove the overturned big rig, while CHP units conducted traffic breaks to manage the growing congestion on both sides of the freeway. As of early Wednesday morning, all northbound lanes remained closed between the SR-134 and Figueroa Street, with major delays reported throughout the area. The crash occurred as a major Pacific storm system pounded Southern California, bringing flash flood warnings, mud and debris flows near recent burn scars, and hazardous driving conditions across the region. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP. No other major injuries were reported.
