Uganda: NAM ministers renew call for peace, multilateralism at Uganda meeting
Foreign ministers from member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have renewed the call for peace and multilateralism at a meeting, which concluded Thursday in Uganda's capital Kampala. Themed "Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence," the NAM Midterm Ministerial Review Meeting condemned the senseless killings and mass displacements seen in conflicts ranging from violence in the Palestinian territories to wars going on in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and South Sudan. Xia Huang, China's special envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, said multilateralism remains essential for maintaining international peace and security. He also voiced concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed clashes persist. Since the beginning of the year, more than 1.6 million people have been newly displaced, with over two-thirds of the displacements linked to ongoing fighting, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The rich mineral wealth in eastern DRC is said to be fueling the war that has dragged in several foreign nations. Uganda, as the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, emphasized the need to respect the territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. The Non-Aligned Movement, comprising 121 member states, is guided by the Bandung Principles, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality among nations, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
