The U.S. government will freeze 11 billion U.S. dollars' worth of infrastructure projects in Democratic-controlled states due to the ongoing government shutdown, Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), said on Friday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be immediately pausing over 11 billion U.S. dollars in lower-priority projects and considering them for cancellation, Vought posted on social media. The projects include a waterfront park in San Francisco, water and wastewater systems in New York City, and bridge expansions in Massachusetts, according to the OMB. Some projects in Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico and other states will also be affected, the OMB said. All of these states voted against Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The Trump administration has already frozen or canceled at least 28 billion U.S. dollars meant for hundreds of projects across the country since the government shutdown began on Oct 1, according to U.S. media reports. These projects are mainly clean energy and transportation infrastructure projects in Democratic states, cities, and congressional districts, the reports noted.
