Drone footage shows Gaza in its all glory before Israel's two-year war
SHOTLIST: RAFAH, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (DECEMBER 11, 2020) (PALESTINE INTERIOR MINISTRY – ACCESS ALL) (FILE FOOTAGE) 1. VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF EMPTY STREETS 2. VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF SEASIDE (FILE VIDEO) RAFAH, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DECEMBER 11, 2020: A drone video, captured on December 11, 2020, has resurfaced, offering a poignant glimpse of Gaza's former tranquility. The footage, shot during the coronavirus pandemic, showcased the empty streets and inherent beauty of the coastal enclave on the eastern Mediterranean, a stark contrast to the widespread devastation witnessed today. The sunny and serene scenes from the video have since been obliterated by a devastating war that began on October 7 and has continued with relentless Israeli bombardments. As the conflict entered its 700th day on Friday, the scale of destruction has rendered the landscape from the 2020 footage almost unrecognizable. The Government Media Office in Gaza stated on Oct. 6 that the prolonged offensive has left nearly 90% of the territory’s infrastructure in ruins and inflicted economic losses exceeding $68 billion. The human cost is staggering, with the office reporting that more than 73,700 people have been killed or remain missing, including over 20,000 children and 12,500 women. The statement accused Israel of "systematic policies of genocide and forced displacement," alleging the use of starvation as a weapon of war and the prevention of displaced families from returning to their homes. The destruction documented since the war began includes 38 hospitals, 833 mosques, and 163 educational institutions, a far cry from the intact cityscape visible in the pre-war drone footage.
