China: Shanghai forum fosters global cooperation for sustainable shipping, aviation
Storyline: Shanghai forum fosters global cooperation for sustainable shipping, aviation [Voice_over] The North Bund Forum serves as a key platform fostering dialogue and practical cooperation across the global shipping and aviation industries. More than 400 representatives from governments, enterprises, international organizations and academia attended the opening ceremony on Sunday. [Sound_bite] Jens Meier, President, International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH): "We are working on efficiency, on all kinds of digitization to improve efficiency on the sustainable topics. I think the city of Shanghai, one of the leading ports worldwide, has the magnetic character to bring more port leaders to join." [Voice_over] At the opening ceremony, 30 new industry achievements were unveiled, including initiatives for green shipping corridors and international aviation hubs. Among them was the announcement of a green shipping corridor between the ports of Shanghai and Melbourne. [Sound_bite] Saul Cannon, Chief Executive Officer, Port of Melbourne: "Today's announcement is an exciting one. The port of Shanghai is the world's largest, busiest port and the port of Melbourne is the busiest port in Australia. So in terms of volumes going across the trade lane between China and Australia, it makes a lot of sense to look to how we can decarbonize that supply chain." [Voice_over] Shanghai Port has become one of the few in the world capable of both LNG and methanol ship-to-ship bunkering. And at the national level, China’s Liner Shipping Connectivity Index has ranked first globally for 19 consecutive years. Beyond shipping, China’s aviation industry has also achieved steady progress in safety, convenience, service and sustainability. [Sound_bite] Yang Chunfei, Deputy General Manager of Marketing Department, China Eastern Airlines: "Flying long-haul, flying international, and flying to emerging markets. Since the beginning of 2024, we have launched 23 new medium- and long-haul international routes. On December 4 this year, we will begin a route from Shanghai to Argentina, achieving flight coverage across all continents and connecting to 160 countries and regions worldwide, with over 1,000 destinations." [Voice_over] As part of its upgrade efforts, the local aviation sector is undergoing a digital transformation to build a smarter service system. With Shanghai’s International Shipping Center nearing completion, this year’s forum offers a platform not only to showcase progress, but to turn the global vision for sustainable shipping into concrete action through international cooperation.
