China: China makes routine 10,000-meter manned deep-sea dives
Storyline: China makes routine 10,000-meter manned deep-sea dives [Voice_over] China’s deep sea exploration sector is marking industry milestones, as the country’s 14th Five-Year-Plan ends this year. China has rapidly advanced its manned submersible fleet with the Jiaolong vessel completing the country's first manned dive beneath Arctic ice recently. The deepest-diving manned submersible, called the Fendouzhe or "Striver", reached a depth of more than 10,000 meters in 2020, further propelling China’s manned diving industry. With the Striver now operating regularly at extreme depths, scientists have discovered new deep-sea species and groundbreaking ecosystems. [Sound_bite] Du Mengran, director, deep-sea scientific research department, Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Science: "With the 'Fendouzhe,' we can now say it is the only manned submersible in the world equipped with robust operational capabilities at the depth of 10,000 meters. Now, many internationally renowned geologists and biologists are joining our hadal exploration program. We need to collaborate with these international peers to advance cutting-edge research in the hadal zone." [Voice_over] Building on its achievements, China’s Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering has launched an international trench exploration and diving program which has been recognized under the United Nations Ocean Decade from 2021 to 2030.
