United States - October 10, 2025 A 10-month-old boy narrowly escaped a deadly choking incident thanks to the swift actions of New York City police officers on October 10. Azia Rodriguez, the boy’s mother, watched in horror as her son, Makai Laboy, struggled to breathe while tossing and turning in his crib. “Knowing that my son's alive, he's OK, he's happy, he's growing, I get to see his first birthday in a month, that's the biggest blessing I could ever ask for,” she said. Rodriguez tried to clear her son’s airway by patting his chest and back, but the obstruction persisted, and she called 911. NYPD officers arrived quickly and performed lifesaving measures that dislodged the blockage. The rescue was captured on body-worn camera. Officers are seen repeatedly patting Makai’s back until he could breathe on his own. Rodriguez described watching the footage as “a lot to process” but said it reinforced her trust in first responders. Makai’s father, Brandon Laboy, praised the officers’ instincts and quick thinking. “It showed in a matter of seconds, that situation could have been a thousand times worse than it was. But with their instincts, their quick thinking, they were able to save his life,” he said. The family plans to celebrate Makai’s first birthday on November 12 and urged parents to keep baby monitors, noting that “every second counts.” Rodriguez emphasized, “All that matters is making sure there's a smile on their face.”
