Thousands escape from scam centre as Burmese troops launch crackdown
This is the dramatic moment hundreds of suspected trafficking victims swam across a river to flee a notorious scam compound in Myanmar.
Footage captured desperate workers paddling across the Moei River toward Tak province in Thailand after a Burmese junta raid on KK Park, one of the country's most infamous fraud hubs, in Myawaddy township on Wednesday, October 22.
Tak Governor Sawanit Suriyakul Na Ayutthaya said at least 1,049 people have crossed from Myanmar into the Mae Sot district since the mass exodus began.
The Immigration Bureau reported that most of the arrivals were Chinese men, while the other escapees included individuals from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, and more than a dozen additional countries.
Police Lieutenant General Choengron Rimpadee, Immigration Bureau spokesman, said officials and security forces were coordinating to conduct thorough screenings.
Thai authorities said they were also providing humanitarian assistance to evacuees.
Burmese state media The Tatmadaw True News Information Team said the Burmese military has arrested more than 2,000 people in the KK Park raid and confiscated Starlink equipment.
Space X, owned by controversial billionaire Elon Musk, said it has cut off more than than 2,500 Starlink devices at the scam hub.
Myanmar is teeming with fraud compounds, which are a key part of its black market along with drug production and illegal mining.
The criminal operations are often run by Chinese-led syndicates thriving in the lawless Golden Triangle region where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet.
