Thai royalists line streets for former queen's funeral procession
Thai royalists lined the streets as they mourned the death of a beloved former queen.
Thousands of mourners dressed in black gathered in Bangkok to pay their respects to Thailand's 'Queen Mother' Sirikit, whose passing was announced on Saturday.
Footage shows the solemn crowd watching as a convoy of cars collected the Queen's remains from King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Her body will lie in state at the Grand Palace.
A grey Volkswagen Caravelle T4 van, once used for work by King Rama IX and later carried his body in 2016, transported the Queen Mother's remains.
Medical staff who had cared for her followed closely behind.
The funeral procession set off at 4:26 pm local time on a 6.2-mile (10 kilometre) route, led by Somdet Phra Maha Veerawong, Assistant Abbot of the Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram temple, followed by the royal van and cars carrying the royal family.
Several royalists were seen crying in grief as they clutch portraits of the Queen Mother.
The procession reached the Grand Palace at 5:05 pm, where Her Majesty's body underwent the royal funeral rites.
From October 27, the public can pay respects to the Queen Mother's portrait at the Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion in the Grand Palace from 8:30 am to 4 pm. While beginning November 9, mourners may visit the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall to pay respects to her royal remains between 9 am and noon.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has declared a year-long mourning period for government officials and asked the public to wear black or dark colours for at least 90 days.
Queen Sirikit, born in 1932, is the 'Queen Mother' of Thailand and the widow of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX.
