China: China's shipbuilding industry sails ahead in past five years
Storyline: China's shipbuilding industry sails ahead in past five years [Voice_over] New data from China's Association of the National Ship Building Industry shows the sector has significantly advanced its capabilities in the past five years. During the country's 14th Five-Year Plan, which started in 2021 and ends this year, Chinese ships accounted for more than 51 percent of the global total, roughly eight percent more than during the country's 13th Five-Year Plan from 2016 to 2020. Officials say the competitiveness of Chinese shipyards has grown, with six companies ranking among the world's top 10 in shipbuilding completions, new orders, and order backlogs. [Sound_bite] Li Yanqing, secretary-general, China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry: "Over the past five years, we have made remarkable advancements in intelligent and high-end products. We have achieved breakthroughs in key marine equipment technologies, and a series of our green products are the first of their kind globally. This once again demonstrates that independent innovation, enhanced industrial capability, and international cooperation remain the critical cornerstones supporting the high-quality development of China's shipbuilding industry." [Voice_over] Officials also highlight China's domestically developed and manufactured ocean drilling vessel called "Dream" which can drill 11,000 meters below the surface of the ocean.
