Uruapan, Mexico - November 01, 2025 Mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez was shot Saturday night in front of dozens of people gathered in the historic center of Uruapan, Michoacán state, to enjoy the “Festival of Candles,” an event organized by local authorities as part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. The murder occurred less than five months after the death of Salvador Bastidas, mayor of the municipality of Tacámbaro, also in Michoacán. Manzo Rodríguez died in a hospital in Uruapan from gunshot wounds inflicted by an unidentified gunman, who was killed by security forces shortly after the attack, Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch reported at a press conference. The attack on Manzo Rodríguez, a former deputy for the ruling Morena party, was recorded in videos shared on social media, showing how dozens of residents and tourists—some of them in costume and with their faces painted—were enjoying the event among hundreds of lit candles, marigolds, and skull figures, when several gunshots were heard and people began to run to protect themselves from the bullets.
