US: Analyst criticizes Trump administration for apathy to people's needs amid SNAP suspension
A U.S. analyst expressed his dissatisfaction with the Trump administration for its indifference to people's needs after the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) triggered by the federal government shutdown. Joseph Williams, former senior editor of US News and World Report, said the suspension of the program will impact countless people in need, noting that U.S. President Donald Trump has not taken the actions necessary to prevent the crisis. SNAP ceased operations on Nov 1 due to the absence of appropriations, as announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program covers approximately 42 million people, primarily low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and the elderly. Enrollees can use government-subsidized food stamps to purchase food at designated stores. "It means that they likely have gone hungry at least one maybe two days. Keep in mind that SNAP payments were supposed to start again on Nov 1 and those benefits have not been restored. Now they've gone to court some states and some anti-hunger advocates to try to get the government moving and to get the president moving on these things. But he's been very stubborn about this. He now says via social media that he'll relent and let these benefits flow after he hears from his lawyers," said the Williams. Although a federal court ruled last week that the Trump administration must use emergency funding to maintain the program, the ruling did not force the administration to act before funds ran out, nor does it require the program be fully funded. Williams criticized the administration for its apparent apathy toward people's needs while simultaneously remaining generous with funds for military and political purposes. "But keep in mind also that the president had absolutely no problem with doing this for the military. He not only cleared money and found discretionary funding for the military, he also accepted a private donation for the military. And that really is not a very good look for the president. This is a real let-them-eat-cake kind of moment where not only do you have people going hungry because of government inaction and because of a government stalemate largely fomented or at least egged on by this president, you have him throwing this lavish party in Mar-a-Lago on top of destroying the east wing of the White House to build a ballroom, which is in turn funded by billionaires and private donations from companies," he said. "Employees still in bread lines and soup lines and soup kitchens are being turned away for lack of food that in part was funded by the government, versus a president who wants to be a dictator giving a lavish banquet in Mar-a-Lago and courting wealthy donors that really have kind of suspended his campaign and his presidency. Not a good look at all. I suspect there will be a political price to be paid for this," said the analyst. SHOTLIST: FILE: Washington D.C., USA - Date Unknown 1. White House; 2.
