A disabled pensioner cycled hundreds of miles to pay his respects to Thailand's late Queen Mother.

Kittkhun Sukkasem, 72, set off from his hometown in Singburi on October 28, three days after Queen Sirikit's death was announced.

Pedalling on his modified tricycle fitted with a Thai flag, the proud royalist travelled to Chiang Rai province before heading south toward Bangkok, where the monarch's remains lay in state.

He reached Ang Thong province today and was seen riding along the Asian Highway as he entered Ayutthaya. He said he plans to rest at a temple in Pathum Thani and is expected to arrive at Sanam Luang Park in Bangkok on November 7.

Despite suffering from muscle weakness on one side of his body after a stroke, determined Kittkhun said he undertook the 1,500-kilometre (932 miles) journey out of gratitude for Queen Sirikit, who had various initiatives for disabled citizens.

He added: 'I want my journey to be recognised globally so the world could see the immense love and devotion that Thai people have for the queen.'

The death of Queen Sirikit was announced on October 25, triggering a one-year mourning period, with Thais ordered to wear black until the end of January.
