Unexploded ordnance in Gaza poses deadly threat to residents despite ceasefire
Storyline: Despite the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, the threat of injury and death remains inside people's homes, as thousands of unexploded munitions were still scattered among the rubble and residential areas, endangering civilians trying to return home. After returning from displacement in southern Gaza, the Hattou family now lives in central Gaza City with an unexploded rocket weighing about two tonnes lodged inside their partially destroyed home. It was fired by an Israeli aircraft to destroy the house, but failed to detonate. The family had no other place to go and chose to stay in their damaged home despite the life-threatening risk of the unexploded missile lying between its walls. "We were in the south, and when we came back, we were shocked to find the rocket here. When I saw it, I was terrified, and so were my children. The neighbors are also worried because it's a giant rocket, around two tonnes, and it still contains explosive material," said Moen Hattou, a Palestinian refugee. The exhausted Palestinian Civil Defense, still struggling after the war, is trying with very limited resources and basic tools to remove these threats. However, they are unable to deal with many unexploded devices due to their massive size and weight. "We receive dozens of appeals every day about rockets inside buildings, on streets, and in alleys. There are different types of rockets, big and small, bombs, mines, we can do nothing for the citizens. These require specialists and special equipment to remove and transport them, resources that are not available in Gaza," said Mahmoud Basal, spokesman of Palestinian Civil Defense. Thirteen-year-old Zein Nour from Gaza City's Al-Nasr neighborhood was collecting firewood for his family to cook near their tent when an unexploded shell went off, nearly killing him. "The children went out to collect firewood and cardboard to make a fire. Suddenly, I heard an explosion. I never imagined it was my kids. When I reached the site, I found several children injured, including my son," said Mohammed Nour, father of injured child Zein. For many in Gaza, going home means stepping back into a battlefield. Unexploded shells serve as a deadly reminder that the dangers of war are far from over, and clearing them could take years. Shotlist: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Recent: 1.
