SHOTLIST: GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (MAY 14, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF PALESTINIAN CHILD WHO MISTOOK UNEXPLODED BOMB FOR TOY LOSES ARM IN BLAST AND HIS BROTHER AT AL SHIFA HOSPITAL 2. MEDICAL DIRECTOR AT AL-SHIFA, DR. HASAN AL-SHAER SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic) GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MAY 14: Thirteen-year-old Mohammed Muammer Bekir lost his right hand in northern Gaza after unknowingly bringing an unexploded Israeli ordnance device into his tent and mistaking it for a toy while searching for bread with his younger brother. As the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip continues unabated, the growing presence of unexploded rockets and munitions in areas of military activity poses a threat to displaced civilians seeking refuge. According to local sources, unexploded ordnance left by Israeli forces continues to cause fatalities and severe injuries among returning civilians, particularly in areas they have entered on the ground. Since March 2, Israel has enforced a systematic policy of starvation in the Gaza Strip by blocking aid deliveries. This has left Palestinians struggling to obtain basic necessities, including food and water. Mohammed’s family now lives in a tent in Gaza City after fleeing bombardments. The children’s search for bread turned into a nightmare when ordnance, mistaken for a toy, exploded inside their makeshift shelter. Recalling the incident, Mohammed said: 'I thought my brother and I could play with it. Then the toy exploded and blew off my right hand. My left hand was injured too. They took us to Al-Shifa Hospital. My brother was wounded in the abdomen and leg.' Tehani al-Araysheh, their mother, was injured in the face and head during the explosion. In tears, she described how hunger had forced her to send her sons out in search of food. 'My children were starving,' she said. They were crying, 'We're hungry! We want bread!' So I sent them to a neighbor's tent. They came back with what they thought was a toy. My son said, 'Mum, this toy will light up the whole tent.' Then it exploded. It turned out to be part of a rocket that had been left behind by the Israeli army. Suddenly, we found ourselves in hospital. We’re devastated. My older son lost his hand. My younger son needs surgery on his leg and a skin graft on his back,' she said. Dr. Hasan al-Shaer, medical director at al-Shifa hospital, has warned that unexploded Israeli munitions left in civilian areas continue to cause injury, particularly as displaced Palestinians return to the north during temporary ceasefires. 'Many of these munitions are disguised as tins of meat or fish, or as children's toys. People have died or lost their eyesight because of them,' he said. 'The Israeli army deliberately leaves these devices behind to harm civilians.' Most of the victims are children and elderly people. We urge everyone not to touch any unfamiliar objects." Since March 2, Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical, and humanitarian aid, deepening an already humanitarian crisis in the enclave. Israel's severe restrictions on essential supplies have left over 2 million Palestinians in desperate conditions, subjecting them to what international organizations describe as a deliberate act of collective punishment. More than 52,900 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have been killed in Gaza during Israel's ongoing military offensive since October 2023. The Israeli government cited the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack as justification to launch its months-long military campaign. However, numerous human rights organizations have condemned the Israeli offensive, characterizing it as a systematic campaign aimed at ethnic cleansing. Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
