China's Fujian aircraft carrier to make regular appearances on high seas: spokesperson
The aircraft carrier Fujian, China's third aircraft carrier and first equipped with electromagnetic catapults, will make regular appearances on the high seas, said a Chinese navy spokesman on Saturday. The Fujian was commissioned into active service on Wednesday at a naval port in Sanya City of south China's Hainan Province. Named after Fujian Province in east China and launched in June 2022, this gigantic vessel is independently designed and built by China. In a written interview, Leng Guowei, the Chinese navy's spokesman, answered questions on the home port of aircraft carrier Fujian, carrier-based aircraft deployment, and future development plans for China's aircraft carriers. Leng noted that aircraft carrier Fujian is the largest warship currently in active service in the navy. While the Sanya military port is the carrier's home port, the vast ocean is its "true home," Leng added. While the Fujian was under construction, the supporting equipment, including carrier-based fighter jets such as J-35, J-15T and J-15D, KJ-600 early warning aircraft and Z-20 series helicopters, was developed and tested steadily as planned, according to Leng. It won't be long before the Fujian is fully outfitted with its carrier-based aircraft, he said. Noting that many of the facilities and technologies on the Fujian are being put into practical use for the first time, Leng said the carrier will continue to be subject to in-depth test verification to further assess the stability of its platform systems after it enters service. He said the carrier will follow plans to conduct aircraft compatibility exercises, formation-based training, and other activities to continuously enhance its combat readiness. Leng emphasized that China's efforts to develop and improve weapons and equipment do not target any other country or specific objective, nor do such endeavors pose threats to other countries or regions. These initiatives are aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, he said. China will make its subsequent aircraft carrier development plans with full consideration of national defense needs, Leng said. Bearing the hull number 18, the Fujian is China's third carrier coming into service. The video shows: China - Date Unknown (CCTV - No access Chinese mainland) 1.
