This is the amusing moment a lantern release went wrong when it landed on another person's head.

Vincent Esguerra launched the white illuminated ornament during the Yi Peng Sky Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

However, the lantern flew low and gradually descended towards a man standing behind him due to the wind on November 6.

Footage shows Vincent following the lantern with his eyes before rushing forward to grab it as it was about to hit the head of a fellow festivalgoer.

He managed to catch the base of the lantern and release it again, this time successfully.

Meanwhile, thousands of lanterns can be seen illuminating the dark sky, floating upwards, carrying the wishes and hopes of the crowds.

Vincent said: 'It was a relief for us that it didn't catch fire or set off the other lanterns nearby.'

The Yi Peng Lantern Festival is a religious event in northern Thailand that celebrates the full moon of the second month in the Thai Lanna calendar.

The festival is marked by the release of sky lanterns into the night sky, which are believed to carry away bad luck and make way for good fortune.
