A shopping mall was flooded as heavy rain struck South Africa.

Footage shows shoppers wading through the brown deluge at the Golden Walk Shopping Centre in Germiston on November 6.

Local media reported that the mall was temporarily closed and emergency personnel were deployed to monitor the flooding, which came after the South African Weather Service issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng province on Thursday.

The weather service warned of heavy downpours, fierce winds, and possible hailstorms.

The Gauteng community safety department has also urged drivers to take care on roads amid the inclement weather.

It said: 'Avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Reduce your speed, switch on your headlights and maintain a safe following distance to ensure your safety and that of other road users.'
