Witness the incredible discovery of late-Roman mosaics in Greece! Unearthed during metro construction in 2018, these 4th-century AD treasures reveal a luxurious urban villa adorned with intricate geometric patterns, dating back to Roman times. Archival 4K footage unveils the moment unique ancient mosaics were revealed beneath the modern streets of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city.

During metro construction works in early 2018, archaeologists uncovered stunning late-Roman mosaics dating back to the 4th century AD — remnants of an opulent urban villa that once stood near the city’s ancient Decumanus Maximus.

The intricate mosaics, decorated with geometric patterns and a central medallion possibly depicting Aphrodite, testify to the wealth and artistic refinement of Roman Thessaloniki — a city that Emperor Constantine the Great once considered making his imperial capital before founding Constantinople.

Other areas discovered in the villa complex were a section of a pillared corridor (stoa), five consecutive rooms, a complete under-floor wood-heating system (hypocaust), and several multicoloured mosaics, which have been destroyed in parts by subsequent construction layers.
