UNCAPTIONED: Reeves Hints At Ending Two-Child Benefit Limit To Tackle Child Poverty
Reeves Hints At Ending Two-Child Benefit Limit To Tackle Child Poverty. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has hinted she may lift restrictions on benefits for larger families in her upcoming Budget, signalling a possible end to the two-child limit introduced by the Conservatives in 2017. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Reeves said it was unfair that children in bigger families were “penalised through no fault of their own”. Her comments suggest the government could move away from the current policy, which limits benefit payments to a family’s first two children. Treasury officials had previously explored a “tapered approach” or capping benefits at three or four children but Reeves’ remarks indicate she favours removing limits entirely. She pledged to take action on child poverty, recalling that the last Labour government “proudly reduced child poverty, and we will reduce child poverty as well.” Reeves added that many families’ financial circumstances can change for reasons beyond their control.
