Brazil: High-level forum on South-South climate cooperation held at China Pavilion during COP30
Storyline: A high-level forum on South-South cooperation on climate change was held Monday as part of the "China Pavilion" series of side events during the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil. The forum aimed to build consensus among Global South countries in addressing climate change, deepen South-South cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), jointly promote green and low-carbon modernization, and explore new pathways for sustainable development. Huang Runqiu, China's Minister of Ecology and Environment, stated in his address that China remains committed to advancing South-South cooperation on climate change, and working with other developing countries to jointly address climate challenges and share achievements in green development. To date, China has signed 55 South-South climate cooperation documents with 43 developing countries, he said. Participants discussed building a green future together and how South-South cooperation can boost global climate governance and lead the green and low-carbon transition. The forum also witnessed the official launch of the "Clean Stoves" flagship project, which aims to reduce household pollution in developing countries, helping relevant nations cut fuel-wood use, strengthen their capacity in tackling climate change and pursuing green, low-carbon development, and safeguard the health of women and children. "The leadership that China has also provided [in addressing climate change]is making sure that all of the Global South can benefit from the experience and the expertise that China has built up over time. And that through South-South cooperation, they will now be able to export, if you will, to the rest of the world, so that children around the world will be saved from the impacts of climate change," said Kitty van der Heijden, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in an interview with China Central Television during the forum. The COP30, taking place from Nov 10 to 21 in Belem, aims to put the fight against climate change back in the center of international priorities. The "China Pavilion" series will continue through Nov. 20, with upcoming sessions covering topics such as the high-quality development and experience-sharing of China's carbon market, China's path toward carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and China's energy transition and new energy development.
