Brazil: Int'l guests hail China's contributions to green transformation at COP 30 side event
Storyline: International guests participating in the 30th United Nations climate change conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil, have praised China's contributions to global green transformation and cooperation at the China Pavilion, where a series of COP30 side events have been hosted. Pei Xiaofei, spokesman of the Chinese delegation at the COP30 and director of the Department of Communications and Education under China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said to the guests at a side event that even the pavilion itself has embraced green elements. "For instance, the chairs behind me, with their wooden-like panels, are actually made from recycled circuit boards. The chair frames are made from electrolytic aluminum recycled from retired lithium batteries," Pei said. Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, spoke highly of China's efforts in promoting green transformation and facilitating South-South cooperation. "South-South cooperation, embodied by the Belt and Road Green Development Coalition, is a powerful engine for this transformation. Initiatives like this show what is possible when countries share technology, finance and expertise. The number of countries engaged and the private sector institutional and philanthropic partnerships forged point to a new economy arising," he said. Many attendees at the event said that China’s experience in green energy transition is valuable for other countries to learn from and emulate. "A lot has been said about the value of trade and environment and thinking trade and investment together to facilitate the cooperation and the transition and support the benefit sharing of the green economy. Again, China has led the way," said Laurence Tubiana, chief executive officer of the European Climate Foundation. The COP30 opened Monday in Belem and will run through Nov 21.
