US: Unreal Shelf Cloud Rolls Over Phoenix At Sunset
Phoenix, United States - November 20, 2025 X user Andrew shared a timelapse video posted on November 20, 2025, captioned "Just an unreal scene this evening in Phoenix. azwx NWSPhoenix". The clip is filmed from an elevated vantage point overlooking a wide suburban stretch of Phoenix, with what appear to be mobile home parks and desert neighborhoods in the foreground and distant mountains outlined on the horizon. It is dusk, and city lights are just beginning to flicker on below. Dominating the scene is a huge, dramatic shelf cloud, the leading edge of a powerful thunderstorm outflow, pushing in from the left like a dark, menacing wall. The base of the cloud hangs very low and sharply defined, perfectly smooth and shelf like, lit from beneath with eerie pink and orange tones from the setting sun. As the sped up footage unfolds, the shelf cloud steadily advances, gradually swallowing the entire view and giving the landscape an apocalyptic, end of the world feel while the sunset colors grow even more intense, heightening the surreal contrast. There is no rain or lightning visible in the video, only the raw visual power of the oncoming storm front. The result is jaw dropping weather imagery that quickly blew up online.
