Starmer Set to Approve China’s Controversial New ‘Super Embassy’ in London. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to give the green light to China’s proposed “super embassy” in London, according to Sky News. The plan has reportedly received backing from UK domestic and foreign security services, despite political criticism and national-security concerns. The Home Office and Foreign Office will not formally oppose the project, provided security “mitigations” are implemented. A final decision is set for 10 December, just weeks before Starmer is expected to visit China early in the new year. The move comes amid heightened tension over alleged Chinese espionage in parliament, following recent MI5 warnings to MPs. The embassy proposal—near the Tower of London—was previously rejected but resubmitted after Labour’s 2024 election victory. Critics fear the site could be used for spying or even detaining opponents of the CCP, especially given redacted sections in the building plans. China insists the embassy follows diplomatic protocol and aims to “promote understanding and friendship.”
