Austria: Iran says Cairo deal with IAEA officially invalid
Storyline: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned a Western-backed resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday, declaring the Cairo deal with IAEA officially invalidated. The Board of Governors meeting of IAEA on the day voted to pass a resolution jointly proposed by the United States, Britain, France and Germany. In response, Araghchi stated, "With this action and disregard for Iran's interactions and goodwill, these countries have tarnished the IAEA's credibility and independence and are disrupting the process of interactions and cooperation between the agency and Iran." The foreign minister said the notification from three European countries to the UN Security Council to activate the snapback mechanism renders the Cairo Agreement no longer the basis for Iran-IAEA safeguards relations. On Thursday, Iran sent an official letter to the IAEA Director General, declaring that the Cairo Agreement was no longer valid. Following airstrikes by Israel and the United States in June, Iran suspended its cooperation with the IAEA, prompting the agency's investigators to leave the country in early July. Since then, the IAEA has repeatedly emphasized the importance of resuming nuclear oversight, and Iran has indicated its willingness to discuss future cooperation with the agency. On Aug 11, senior IAEA officials visited Iran for the first time since the halt in cooperation. Subsequently, on Sept 9, during a visit to Egypt, Araghchi announced in Cairo that Iran and the IAEA had reached an agreement to restore their collaborative efforts regarding Iran's nuclear issues.
