Horse left writhing in agony after fireworks set off metres away from stable
A rescue horse was left in excruciating pain after neighbours set off fireworks metres away from her stable.
Amy Potter, 33, filmed the aftermath after her nine-year-old rescue horse, Zuri, was left terrified and later diagnosed with stress-induced colic.
The incident happened on Friday, November 7, while Amy was at work.
According to Amy, neighbours had set off a display in their front garden, which is near the horses' shelter.
When she arrived back home, both her rescue horses, Zuri and Titan, 22, were covered in sweat from frantic running and too stressed to eat or drink.
Amy, from Epping Upland, Essex, said:
"It's astonishing to me that people would even think that is OK. "
"Zuri has now recovered from her colic but if I hadn't found her when I did, I'm sure she would have died that night."
Amy rescued Zuri from a slaughterhouse at the age of two.
The horse had previously broken a leg as a foal, meaning she could not be ridden or used for work, making her rescue a lifeline.
Amy said: "Zuri has been in my life for about seven years. "
"She's come so far in terms of trust."
" When we first got her, she was so nervous she wouldn't let anyone near. "
"Now she's a big softie and provides great company for Titan."
Living in a rural area, Amy thought her horses were safe from firework displays but while at work on November 7, Amy received a call from another neighbour and her landlady.
Amy rushed home to find Zuri and Titan shaken, with dried sweat covering their bodies from running around in panic.
Amy said: "My landlady sounded so distressed. "
"I rushed home to get to them and when I got there they were clearly shaken. "
"I could feel their bodies covered with dried sweat from running around and both of them were too stressed to eat or drink anything."
According to Amy, Zuri's condition worsened over the weekend.
And by the following Tuesday, Amy found her lying flat out in the field, showing signs of colic, an abdominal pain condition common in horses.
Emergency vets were called immediately.
Amy said: "It was really scary. "
"I worried about what could happen to her before the vet arrived. "
"Luckily, they came within 20 minutes, diagnosed her, and provided fluids and medication. "
"After a few days of careful supervision, she recovered."
