Climate activists dropped 30 tables in protest over environmental policies.

The action took place as climate talks in Belem, Brazil, entered their final days, highlighting what the protesters described as unmet commitments by the government and regional authorities.

Protesters emphasised the need for institutions to participate seriously in international negotiations on climate change.

Footage shows demonstrators placing green tables outside the Regione Piemonte tower, while raising a banner reading 'COP30: Missing Tables' in Turin, Italy.

Maria, one of the rallyists, said: 'The overturned tables represent all the missed opportunities and broken promises of more than 30 years of climate conferences, starting with the failed goals of the Paris Agreement.'

'While in Piemonte we are losing our mountains, the Italian Government has effectively boycotted this year's COP - both physically and politically.'

Her comments referred to the absence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from Belem, where Minister Antonio Tajani urged countries to avoid a dogmatic approach.

In recent months, Italy has opposed several European climate policies, including the 2040 emission-reduction targets, electric vehicle standards, and industrial decarbonisation plans, while authorising new drilling projects.

At COP30, Italy is, alongside Poland, the only European country not supporting a fossil-fuel phase-out roadmap.

Italy is the most affected country in Europe by extreme events, with heatwaves causing 4,500 deaths in 2025, including 230 in Torino.
