China: Cold wave hits northern China
Storyline: A strong cold front ripped through many parts in northern China in the past two days, bringing snow and low temperatures which disrupted traffic in regions. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) reported on Sunday that a strong snow weather occurred on Saturday in the northern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest, and strong winds were reported in northern Xinjiang and western Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China. In Hami City of Xinjiang, the temperature has plummeted to minus 13 degrees Celsius, posing heavy safety risks for travelers. On Sunday morning, the city implemented traffic restrictions on sections of expressways, including the G7 Beijing-Xinjiang expressway, to ensure safe travel. The restrictions were lifted when the snow weakened on Sunday afternoon. Most northern regions have seen a temperature drop of four to eight degrees Celsius, with some areas seeing drops of up to 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds. The CMA predicted that temperatures across central and eastern China will experience rapid fluctuations, particularly in northern regions. Cities including Harbin in Heilongjiang Province and Shenyang in Liaoning Province in the northeast may see their highest temperatures hitting new lows for the second half of the year on Thursday. A cold wave will also hit Beijing, with the highest temperature dropping by five degrees Celsius to around 11 degrees Celsius. According to the CMA, the cold wave will rapidly move southward, advancing into Guangdong and Fujian provinces in southern China.
