United States - January 12, 2026 At 8:22 a.m. HST on January 12, Episode 40 of sustained lava fountaining began at the summit of Kīlauea volcano. Lava from the north vent is shooting over 800 feet (250 m) into the air, feeding expanding flows across the crater floor. Intermittent spatter continues from the south vent. The eruption is releasing volcanic gases at rates of 50,000–100,000 tonnes per day, which may contribute to volcanic air pollution, known as vog, downwind. The eruptive plume reaches more than 13,000 feet (4,000 m) into the sky. With light, variable winds at the summit, the plume is expected to remain near Halemaʻumaʻu and the summit area. Tephra, fragments of lava that fall through the air, is landing on the western and southern rim of Halemaʻumaʻu crater.
