Friends on paddle boat stunned by close encounter with giant manta ray in Italy
Filmer Stefano Giannecchini captured this incredible moment off the coast of Massa Carrara, Italy, on July 15, 2025.
The video shows the filmer and a colleague on a red paddle boat investigating a shape in the water. Suddenly, a massive ray approaches them, its fin breaking the surface just inches from their vessel.
The pair can be heard screaming in a mix of fear and awe, with one exclaiming in Italian, "È enorme!" (It's huge!) and "No Marco!" as the giant sea creature glides effortlessly beneath them. The footage captures the animal's impressive size and wingspan as it swims near the shore before eventually moving away.
